The New Bern area, sometimes referred to as the Crystal Coast is becoming a favorite spot for golfers of all levels! Our courses are not as crowded as those of our southern Carolinian neighbor, and our mild year-round climate is appreciated by northerners and southerners alike!
Some of the excellent quality and designed courses have hosted a number of large golf tournaments, including the Curtis Strange Shriner Classic, usually held the last week in September at The Emerald golf club in Greenbrier. There are several inter-club organizations for residents players (both men and women of all handicaps) who enjoy monthly tournaments, lunches and gatherings at different clubs.
(NOTE: Tiger Woods and Justin Leonard played in the annual classic held on September 11, 2000 at the Emerald Golf Club.)
Weyerhaeuser has been instrumental in developing three of the finest courses in the area. Starting in 1988 with The Emerald, the well-known national developer then opened Cypress Landing Golf Club in Chocowinity in 1995.
More recently in early 1998, they were proud to open their first private golf and country club in New Bern, called Taberna (pronounced Tá bern á). Literally translated, the word Taberna means "place of hospitality" in Swiss.
The 18-hole championship golf course was designed to blend in with Taberna's environmental features of rolling hills, dense foliage, lakes, streams and wetlands, surrounded by a lovely community of residential homes. (As of August 1999, there are over 300 homesites sold and approximately 140 families in residence. Taberna lot sales are nearly two years ahead of schedule, toward a completion of approximately 700-800 upscale homes). There are two lakes on the Taberna course, and several natural "environmentally protected" areas which are challenging water hazards for golfers of all handicaps. But, the biggest challenge of all are the numbers of fairway and greenside sand bunkers! Contact me to register for a "Taberna Tour" and a free round of golf.
The New Bern Golf and Country Club is the only other private golf club in New Bern, and was established nearly 80 years ago. With their lovely clubhouse located on the Trent River, the views are just magnificent!
